Art, Awareness, and Compassion: Launch of Alzheimer’s Awareness Month at Kenwyn House

Paintbrushes and colours became voices on Monday, 1st September, as the Seychelles Alzheimer’s Foundation (SAF) unveiled an art exhibition at Kenwyn House Gallery, featuring works created by Alzheimer’s patients as part of the Foundation’s art therapy initiative. Each piece told a story — of resilience, of memory, of connection — offering visitors a rare and moving glimpse into the world of those living with the condition.

The launch of the exhibition marked the beginning of Alzheimer’s Awareness Month in Seychelles. The evening carried an emotional weight, made even more special by the presence of some of the patients-turned-artists, who proudly stood alongside their creations. Their work reminded everyone that even in the face of memory loss, creativity and self-expression remain powerful forms of communication.

Among the distinguished guests was Her Excellency, the First Lady of the Republic of Seychelles, Mrs. Linda Ramkalawan, who joined families, caregivers, and advocates in honouring the patients and the cause.

The event also saw the unveiling of the “ Compassionate Caregiving”  booklet authored by Dr. Anna Nordstrom, a practical and compassionate guide designed to help families navigate the challenges of caring for loved ones with Alzheimer’s or dementia.

As one visitor reflected while standing before a painting,

“This isn’t just art. It’s emotion made visible.”
For Gran Kaz, supporting SAF is not just about funding, but about helping give a platform to voices that need to be heard. Together, through art and awareness, we can nurture a more compassionate community.

Speaking at the event, Gran Kaz PR Manager, Shama Amesbury highlighted the company’s belief in the power of art to open meaningful conversations and build empathy. The exhibition is a testament to this, giving voice to the experiences of those living with Alzheimer’s and dementia through creative expression.

The launch was just the beginning of a month-long calendar of activities led by SAF. On World Alzheimer’s Day, 21st September, Kenwyn House will be illuminated in purple — a universal symbol of solidarity with those affected by Alzheimer’s.

Gran Kaz is proud to stand with the Seychelles Alzheimer’s Foundation in its mission to raise awareness, foster compassion, and support the community.
